Yes, very probably, because if you’ve clicked on to this
page you’re likely to be wanting to help – and if you
want to, you can.
At our main Activity Centre in Leicester, volunteers
help every day during the week between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm, or
for part of that time. You don’t need any particular skills,
but you do need to be a ‘people person’. If you can
relate to people who may have difficulty in communicating with you,
or who may well not remember your name from one week to the next,
or whose concentration span may be limited, then you can certainly
help. People with brain injuries need their confidence restored
and very often just need to talk.
If you do have skills in art or craft activities, including things
like photography or computing, or perhaps cookery, and feel you
can share these with Headway Members, this would be a bonus.
The same personal qualities are needed by our volunteers at our
Outreach Centres in Loughborough, Enderby and Melton
Mowbray.
If you feel a bit hesitant at face-to-face working to start with,
there are nearly always administrative jobs that
we need help with. Book keeping is one, and then there are things
like public relations and fundraising, both vital to keeping up
the level of service we provide.
Whatever you can do, one thing is certain. Despite any apprehensions
you may feel beforehand, you will find yourself working in one of
the friendliest places imaginable. Some of our volunteers have written
about their experiences in ‘Headway Happenings’ –
read about Gary's, Cindy's and Emily's
experiences. Just give us a call on 0116 273 9763, or email
Headway@HeadwayLeicester.org.uk,
or drop in and see us at 4 Hospital Close, off Wakerley Road. We’ll
be happy to hear from you.
