Brooksby College

Almost at the same time as the Leicester College development planning stage, Brooksby Agricultural College approached Headway in relation to their Vocational Foundation Course.

In April, Sue Hannam met with Trevor Alcock at Brooksby to discuss what options might be successful for current Headway members. They currently run a variety of 'Country Skills' courses which cover areas such as conservation, horticulture and landscaping, small animal care and woodworking, with options to have some experience of other aspects of the work at Brooksby - fisheries, dairy and horse care.

In June a group of 7 Headway members and 3 staff visited the college, were shown around the various sites and had an opportunity to talk to Trevor directly about the courses which would be accredited by the National Proficiency Tests Council (NPTC). This will involve one day a week for 1 year and students will achieve accreditation on completion
If one year is unrealistic, then members have the option of working on a termly basis and would receive a Certificate of Attendance but for funding to be agreed initially by the College, then students have to enrol for the whole year.

Initially, feedback from Headway members has been quite positive and we have 6 definite enrolments to date. It is hoped that one or two others might join the course, which starts on Friday 13 September.

Headway is looking for some sponsorship to cover costs of tuition and examination fees (£30 per person), transport and provision of suitable overalls.
