| SPOTLIGHT ON: KENNETH SCHOFIELD |
Ken
Schofield was involved in an RTA in the summer of 2001 and was taken to
Kettering General Hospital. Initially, it was thought thatKen was so severely brain damaged that he might need to go to the specialist unit in Putney, but he came out of his coma eventually and embarked on a long rehabilitation via the YDU and then recently into a nursing home close to family and friends in Loughborough. Throughout this process, Headway Outreach Support Worker Paul Winfield has supported the family and Ken. With Paul’s encouragement and the use of a laptop computer, Ken has written this article recently: “I am very happy here. I was at the YDU at Leicester General for 14 months. I woke up there and do not remember my stay at Kettering at all. The first person I remember seeing is Fiona at the YDU who has since joined the Brain Injury team. I remember asking her what the hell happened to me? She replied that I had been involved in a really serious motorcycle accident. I was in a coma for a month before but I cannot remember this at all. Before my accident I was a builder, a teacher of my building skills at nearby Stephenson College, Coalville. I had an HNC qualification to do so. I
owe my life to numerous people who deserve a mention but I will keep my
list short and sweet as not to bore you to death but I must thank my wife
and kids and my brother for everything they have done. I have dealt with
my accident and I have one massive regret. That bloody motorbike. I should
never have bought it in the first place. But I am a typical man, stubborn.
They are just too powerful anywhere. Before you ask, it was a race tuned
Suzuki TL 1000s. Now I am no longer interested in any bikes, period. Believe
me. My kids are banned from ever riding one! Just look at me.A special thank you to Headway for letting me use their time etc to write this. Remember, nobody is perfect, only me!” (Typed on 24th and 31st March 2003 by Ken himself) |
