Have you or a close relative or friend had a brain injury?
The Government group writing the National Service Framework for Long term Conditions (to be published in 2004) is consulting carers and all people who have had an acquired brain injury.

This NSF will dictate how services to people with acquired brain injury (and other neurological conditions) will develop between 2005 and 2015. Members of the Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance (LMCA) want this NSF to provide a blueprint for services which will improve the quality of life. They want to achieve this in a
way that fully involves users, carers, voluntary and independent organisations as well as health and social care professionals.

They want your views by the 14th November and there is a questionnaire that Headway UK has distributed
amongst all its members – so please fill this in promptly if you have received one. If you’ve not had one then
ring Headway House for one to be sent immediately! Or you can look up the website www.lmca.org.uk for
the longer version.

These are the broad themes of their enquiries:
1. Equal access to health and social care services
2. Independence and quality of life for people who use services
3. Choice of services to allow people to live how they want and where they want
4. No discrimination
5. Inclusion in decisions
6. Carers support
7. The User of the service should come first
8. People who find it hard to make decisions should be protected
9. Services should be as specialist as people need them to be
10. Users should be told in plain language about benefits like direct payments, DLA etc
11. There should be special laws relating to people with long term conditions
12. People should have high quality information at all stages of using services

Headway in Leicester feels that we should also flag up the difficulties of communication and perception but
there is a chance for all people with an acquired brain injury and their relatives and carers to make any comments they like.

So please help and quickly!
