| I
started work in December 2003, following the retirement of Jill
Bernhardi, who achieved so much during her time working with LLR
Headway, which has left me with a very hard act to follow!
Even though we receive funding from various statutory authorities
and a grant from the National Lottery Charities Board Community
Fund, this still leaves a deficit of £50,000 over the coming
year and
that’s my target amount to raise! Sources of income range
from local company donations, trust funds and charitable foundations,
fundraising events and activities from local groups, organisations,
individuals and Headway members. Every little bit helps us achieve
our target amount, even down to individuals holding a coffee morning
or children organising a sponsored event – the list is endless.
A really good week to arrange a fundraising event is during National
Brain Injury Awareness Week from 15th – 21st March 2004 and
we would be happy to arrange a photographer from the local press
to come along and publicise your fundraising efforts.
One way to secure fundraising support from national companies is
to use contacts through our members, carers and supporters. Many
major companies offer support to charities but only if a member
of staff nominates the charity – so if there is anyone with
a contact that can be used for our benefit, please let me know!
Over the next three months the Dixons Group are supporting Headway
through their Action4Disability charity campaign and will be selling
Dangermouse badges at all the till points, for a suggested donation
of £1. The badges will be on sale in Dixons, Currys, PC World
and The Link. The money raised from the pin badge sales will go
to Action4Disability, a consortium of disability charities chosen
by staff at the Dixons Group for this year. All funds raised will
go towards Headway, Action for Blind People, Down’s Syndrome
Association and Parkinson’s Disease Society.
Another area of development, which now requires funding, is a proposed
extension to the Activity Day Centre. This has yet to be ratified
by the Board of Trustees.
Even though costs for the work are still based on an estimate, I
am already searching for possible funding bodies, with the aim of
raising all the money from one place, to include the building work
and fitting out of the new area. The amount required is estimated
in the region of £100,000 and add this to the £50,000
required to cover existing costs means there is a lot of fundraising
work to be done this year!
