HEADWAY EXPANDS ITS SERVICES IN SOUTH LEICESTERSHIRE

Leicestershire Leicester and Rutland Headway has announced the strengthening of its services to brain injury victims in the south of the county.

The charity's success over the last 12 years has helped it attract funding for an extra Support Assistant in its Outreach operation, and Julia Bailey has joined Dawn Grey in offering help, counselling and practical support to Headway members. Julia sees her task as empowering people to lead more independent and fulfilling lives after brain injury, and providing advice, advocacy and assistance to rebuild their lives. "This may involve attending peer support groups" says Julia, "so that people can get together and help each other, facilitating people to try new skills in colleges, in voluntary placements or in getting back to work."
She also sees a big opportunity to increase the profile of Headway in the area. "Too often people slip through the net of vital support required, not just immediately after their injury but also throughout their lives. Dawn and I aim to increase the knowledge of the services that we provide so more people learn about brain injury and its effects, as well as finding those people who would like and need more support to live a full and rewarding life after their injuries or illness."
Julia is committed to working with disabled people, increasing their independence and empowering them to know their rights and increase their choice and control of their own lives. She says: "I feel there is great scope for Headway to increase awareness of brain injury and provide stimulating and enjoyable activities to more people in the area."
Headway works with victims and their carers in their homes and at their Outreach Centre at Brockington College. If there are any readers who would like to know more about Headway, their Head Office is at 4 Hospital Close, Leicester LE5 4WP (0116 273 9763)
