A multi-talented organisation is putting its work on show at
the City Art Gallery in Leicester next week.
The exhibition is called ‘Headway Works!’. It includes
pottery, woodwork, digital video, digital image manipulation,
paper and card making, fabric craft and recycling weaving (otherwise
known as ‘Trendy Trash!’).
All
the artists are members of Headway, the brain injury association.
They produce their work at Leicester’s Headway House with
the help of staff, volunteers and external tutors.
Art and crafts are part of the rehabilitation process for people
who have suffered a sudden brain injury. For many it is something
quite new. Headway’s lifelong learning programme enables
some of them to develop their new skills further at Adult Education
Colleges. Headway House Manager Marietta Sharp says: "Over
the week at Headway, many activities take place involving different
members. People come from diverse backgrounds as a brain injury
can affect anyone - at any time and in any place! The openness
of the environment and people attending Headway encourages people
to express themselves creatively and inspires others to attempt
activities which they haven't tried before".
Headway and the City Gallery are staging the exhibition to celebrate
2003 – The European Year for People with Disabilities. But
it is people with very real abilities who will remain in the minds
of the Gallery’s visitors over the next couple of weeks.
‘Headway Works!’ is at the City Gallery, Granby Street,
from 19-30 August. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Leicester,
the High Sheriff of Leicestershire and the Lord Lieutenant of
Rutland will be among the guests at a Private View on the evening
of 19 August.
