New Chair for Headway
Michael Switzer retires from Chairmanship
Carol Birch took over from Michael Switzer as our Chair of Trustees at the
beginning of April 2007.
Michael had been in the job for over seven years, and under his Chairmanship
Headway has seen some of the most important growth and changes since we started
off as a small charity in 1991. The most noticeable thing has of course been
the extension to Headway House, which Michael was instrumental in bringing
into our Business Plan in the first place, and in seeing through once the
Trustees had agreed it should go ahead.
Much of his work was done behind the scenes, particularly in handling sometimes
tricky negotiations with our funders. He also oversaw the change in management
when Sylvia Davis retired and Mary Goulty took over. He has been a ‘hands-on’
Chairman, visiting the House on a regular basis and providing advice at all
times.
“Headway is now established throughout the City and County as a respected
and highly professional organisation setting very high standards” said
Michael on handing over to Carol. He will continue to be a Trustee and to
contribute his time as a volunteer in a number of ways.
Carol has been vice Chair for the past year after joining the Board of Trustees
on her retirement from the post of Director of Resources at Leicester College.
She spent most of her working life in education, and is therefore very encouraged
by the progress we as a charity have made in providing educational opportunities
to members in recent years. She says she feels “honoured to have been
asked to take over from Michael” and that she will do her best to provide
as much support, guidance and leadership as he has done.
