strategy is the first whole systems strategy for people with brain injury
to be commissioned by the Disability Programme Board, a multi-agency
planning forum for health and local authorities in Leicester, Leicestershire
and Rutland. The strategy sets out a direction for the modernisation and improvement of services over the next ten years for people with brain injury and their carers. The strategy was prepared in advance of the National Service Framework (NSF) for long term conditions which was launched in March 2005. The proposed priorities for action (section 9) will be subject to the requirements in the NSF and future government priorities. The majority of people following brain injury will make a good recovery. Some will have a severe complex disability requiring specialised rehabilitation followed by a lot of support in the community. Those less severely injured may make a partial recovery returning home, but requiring information or support to adjust and live with their disability. A larger group suffer apparently minor injury, but subsequently have high-level cognitive deficits such as memory and/or attention problems or altered personality.
